Thyra

Thyra (Rjóð frá Kálfhóli 2)

Thyra made the long journey from Iceland to Washington in the winter of 2022.  She, and her buddy Mosi, spent almost 2 months in isolation for their own protection.  In Iceland there are no contagious horse diseases so when they moved here we needed to get their immune systems boosted so our current horses would be less likely to get them sick.  They have been slowly introduced to the Tashunka program and will hopefully become a major part of the Lesson program.

Fun Facts......

  • Thrya is 5 gaited. Meaning she can walk, trot, tolt, canter, and flying pace.  Check out this video to learn more about Icelandic gaits.
  • She was born on June 15, 2008.
  • Thyra is one of two Tashunka horse’s to have an international passport.
  • Using allbreedpedigree.com, Thrya bloodlines can be traced back to 1908. Check it out!

The Icelandic Horse

Some say the Icelandic horse has been genetically isolated for 1000 years.  In that time the Icelandic shorelines have been closed to horses being imported into the country.  That has helped to create an environment free of contagious horse diseases.  As Iceland has developed as a country the horse has been a critical part of its success.  For more information on the Icelandic Horse, check out the Horses of Iceland website.
