Adopt

Is it time to Adopt?

If you are asking yourself this, it’s likely you have numerous other questions to answer. How do I adopt a mustang?  Where do I go? How much does it cost? Am I ready?  Is it dangerous? Will Amazon deliver?

The good news is, by asking those questions, you’re already on the right track. It is a good idea to gather all the information first. Speak with an equine professional that you trust. The better prepared you are, the more likely your adoption will go smoothly.

If you are not sure where to start, the Bureau of Land Management has resources on the Wild Horse and Burro Program website. Be sure to check out facility and transportation requirements to make sure you have an appropriate shelter, fencing, and horse trailer.  Below are some other things to consider.

Where do I get a Mustang?

There are many ways to get a mustang, an untouched horse, a horse gentled and started in-hand, or a horse already started under saddle.

If you want to select your own untouched wild horse, the BLM Online Corral and BLM Adoption Facilities are great places to start!

If you want to throw your hat in the competition ring, you could apply for contests like the Extreme Mustang Makeovers, and Local TIP Challenges.  Each event is a little different. Check to see if you choose a horse from a preselected pool of horses, or have it assigned to you. Keep in mind most of these events have an auction at the end of the competition. It is good to know ahead of time which events require your horse to be put up for auction, and which events it’s optional.

Looking to adopt or buy a horse that has already been started in some way? Check Extreme Mustang Makeovers, local TIP Trainers, Local TIP Challenges, and horse sale sites like Dreamhorse.com.

Which horse is right for me?

Selecting a horse can be an exciting, confusing, and even an overwhelming process. Many horses need a home, and choosing the right one for you can be a difficult decision. This is probably the hardest part in the adoption process.

Really think through what kind of horse you want before going to the adoption center.  Be completely honest and realistic about your abilities, resources, interests, and goals. Create a list of the kind of horse you want, clearly identifying “musts”, “wants”, and “likes”.  Upon arrival at the adoption facility or event, stick to your list. It’s easy to get distracted by the variety of available horses and potentially make hasty decisions.

It is a good idea to recruit the help of an equine professional to assist you in choosing a horse. A second or third pair of eyes can be incredibly helpful during this exciting and challenging time.
